Diverse Teaching Approaches and Strategies
1.Small Class Teaching
Small Class Teaching has been shown to enable students to enjoy more educational opportunities and resources. They get to receive more individual attention from teachers in class. In this approach, innovative and interactive teaching methods are vibrantly implemented. These measures enable students to be more involved and proactive learners.
2.Cooperative Learning
In order to address the needs of our diverse student population, our school has adopted a cooperative learning approach. It involves students helping one another in small-group settings, which provide them opportunities to develop both academically and socially.
3.e-Learning
In the classroom, our teachers use global e-Learning resources such as Nearpod and Kahoot, as well as other relevant apps to enhance students’ interests, increase their participation and jumpstart discussions that strengthen interactions and mutual learning. Outside the classroom, students can learn through different online e-Learning platforms for various subjects. These learning platforms take into account the progress of each student and provide appropriate learning content to suit their individual needs.
4.Blended Learning
Blended Learning is an innovative teaching model that combines face-to-face lessons and online learning. It allows students to learn both in physical classrooms and on online platforms. Blended Learning fully utilises technology to break the restrictions of time and location, thereby enhancing learning effectiveness and interactivity.
Students use Google Classroom to access videos and self-study content, thus allowing them to preview the materials at home. They are assigned digital assignments before class to reflect on their prior knowledge. Throughout this process, teachers get to check on the progress of students and assess if there are any necessary adjustments in the in-class teaching content. Teachers also convert basic knowledge and key points into electronic self-learning materials which can be accessed before class or reviewed after class. This frees up more in-class time for experiments, group discussions, presentations and question-and-answer sessions. This approach leads to an improvement in learning effectiveness. Additionally, teachers arrange for students to share their learning outcomes on the online platform through engaging in discussions and providing feedback.
The school also provides various electronic self-directed learning platforms for students which offer dynamic learning content, such as MySmartABC, Koobits, and RainbowOne. Students can learn independently based on their own abilities and progress, cultivating their self-directed learning skills. Apart from using Blended Learning in regular classes, we also try to apply it in other learning activities, such as during project-based learning sessions, field trips, and the Life-Wide Learning Day.
5. Self-directed Learning
Through SDL our lessons go beyond traditional teacher-driven approaches. They are student-led so as to empower our children to gain greater ownership of their learning journeys. It involves a process where students establish their learning goals, monitor their progress and reflect and evaluate the outcomes.
By promoting Self-directed Learning, our school aims to equip our students with a number of important skills which include literacy and numeracy skills, research and information skills as well as communication and critical thinking skills. They are also taught reflecting skills such as conducting a self-evaluation of their current situation, their study habits and their time management.
