Bonjour, et bienvenue !!! (Hello, and welcome !!!)
Come learn French at our school from P1 to P6 !!!
Why learn French in Hong Kong ?
Hong Kong is a highly international and multicultural city, with many nationalities and languages, as well as a strong cultural diversity. Besides, learning a foreign language is one of the most important skills to communicate and to fit into the now globalized world. Therefore, we do think at our school that exposing our students to new languages and cultures will help them broaden their horizons and understand the world better.
The French language is the 5th most spoken language in the world, being spoken in more than 30 countries. Besides getting more and more popular in Hong Kong, French is also increasingly spoken here due to the recent rapid growth of the number of French expatriates. For these reasons, French has grown stronger and stronger over the past few years in the Hong Kong curriculum. This has resulted in French being highly regarded and a key element to enter prestigious secondary schools and universities. Hong Kong is also one of the rare cities that treasures French culture enough to hold the French May and the Hong Kong French Film Festival every year with success, as well as different inter-schools events and competitions (French Speech Competition, French Dictation…etc.).
Teaching methods and aim of the curriculum
The French Department has designed a tailor-made curriculum for the students of our school, from P.1 to P.6. Our curriculum is specifically designed for primary school students who take French as a 2nd or 3rd language. It takes into account both students’ ages and levels.
For P1 to P3 levels, the French curriculum aims to introduce the students to the French language, its basic concepts and vocabulary, such as colors, animals, food or family, as well as self-introduction.
The lessons are activity-based, and the techniques used to teach are mainly based on games, mime and songs or art and crafts.

For P4 to P6 levels, the curriculum aims to give the students the basic language skills they would need if they decide to pursue French learning in secondary school. Lessons are more focused on grammar and sentence structures, leading the students to level A1 (the first level of the European languages recognition).
Lessons are designed to give equal priority to the 4 strands of language learning for students: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
The ratio between vocabulary/grammar teaching and interactive activities is adapted for the age, learning styles and individual pace of our students.

Our French Teachers :
Monsieur Nicolas (Mister Nicolas)
Bonjour! Je m’appelle Monsieur Nicolas. I am French, born and raised in Paris. I came to Hong Kong in 2016 and I have been teaching French and English in Hong Kong as a private teacher and in learning centers to students of all ages since then. Since 2017, I have been teaching French at HKTAWTS to all Primary classes and levels, with a specialization in the upper forms and the aim to help them gain enough confidence to pursue French language learning in Secondary School.
I really enjoy teaching Primary students as they are very curious and can learn very fast. Moreover, I am happy to share my culture and involve students from very different origins and backgrounds in the French language and culture, notably during the French Club extra-curricular activity !
I also have a lot of fun while helping students prepare for inter-schools competitions like the French Speech Competition, as it is an opportunity for them to put themselves in the forefront, be more comfortable speaking in front of an audience, as well as to boost their self-confidence !
Miss Alice
Bonjour! I am Ms. Alice, I am the French teacher for students from P1 to P3. I speak French, English and Spanish fluently, as well as a little Italian, Portuguese and Japanese. I have always loved learning and teaching languages as I believe they are a way to open up our world and to lead us to new experiences, opportunities and friends!
If you join the French lesson, I hope you like singing! I like teaching students through hands-on activities and yes, songs. I have also created digital material that I hope will provide students with opportunities to immerse themselves in French at home.
Let’s discover the French language and culture together!
The French Club
The French Club is a weekly extra-curricular activity held in a small group and is open to all students who are motivated and passionate about learning more about the French language and culture. The lessons provide an immersion into French culture and its quirkiness, in a very fun and relaxed atmosphere !
This immersion is carried out by elements of French culture such as songs, food, festivals or movies. The concepts and vocabulary items introduced to the students are immediately put into practice through many activities, games or quizzes.
This activity also represents an opportunity for students and teachers to interact and discuss more extensively and confidently.
Every French Club lesson opens a new window for students and is a great opportunity for them to learn new things while having fun !

The French Speech Competition
Our school joins the Hong Kong French Speech Competition every year. This event brings together hundreds of Primary and Secondary Hong Kong students. It aims to enhance students’ abilities to deliver a speech in French. The students are given a text or a poem that they will have to recite by heart, using all of their ability to interpret and convey the right message and emotions.
This event is very popular in Hong Kong among the French-learning students. Every year, our students deliver outstanding performances, attain very high scores and bring many prizes to our school !
But most importantly, it represents an opportunity for them to put what they have learnt into practice and push the boundaries of speaking, especially in a foreign language, and to gain some lasting self-confidence.

The French Speech Competition 2018/19
For the 9th Hong Kong French Speech Competition, HKTAWTS was hosting the Primary School section of the competition. And in that year, our school was brilliantly represented by our students, since it won 11 Prizes among the different categories in which it was competing, including six 1st Runner-Up prizes and 1 Winner prize in the P5 Girls Category !
All their teachers are very proud of the efforts and involvement the participating students put into the competition !
